Teaching methods - general information

During the year, you have regular meetings in which you discuss the progress of your master's project. These are both individual meetings and group meetings. In addition to guidance from your personal coach, you may also receive guidance from one of the other coaches with various areas of expertise.

You will work on your master's thesis. You are given the space to realise a project - research, artistic and design-oriented - in which you demonstrate competencies, design skills, personal positioning / artistic vision and technical skills. You can carry out this master project individually or in teams.

Plenums are organised in which you present your project within a predetermined time limit to the entire group of master students from your own context and the accompanying lecturers. Appropriate audiovisual resources are provided for this purpose. These plenums are also open to other students and lecturers from the other master contexts and bachelor years.

You present the chronology of the work and research process in a process folio. Naturally, each time with the correct source reference.

Furthermore, you will do an internship of 240 hours spread over about 10 weeks in a company, organisation or with a professional.

Learning objectives

To understand the applied context
Within the applied context, you take up your own position and justify this to peers and the field of work.
You investigate your own field of study and do so from different perspectives.
You question this within a general applied context and can justify the reasons for this (self-)critical attitude.

To initiate, present and develop a project
You initiate your own authentic visual work that bears witness to artistic insight and that explores and/or goes beyond the boundaries of the field of study.
You place the work in front of peers and can justify this.
You develop visual work by means of thorough design and/or artistic research and are well aware of the importance of this process.

To understand the proces of designing an artistic research
You are able to analyse, understand and organise the self-assigned assignment into a chronological work process.
You carry out this process within a theoretical, reflective and design and/or artistic framework.
You justify the choices made (both in terms of content and technique), which lead to the obtained result.

An artistic research conduct with atention for: coordination, problem solving, mediation and presenting
You are aware that coordination and consultation with third parties can be crucial for a (problem-solving) practice.
You deal with uncertainty, organise yourself and act as a mediator.
You present the work coherently and clearly (in whatever form).

Subject matter

This context focuses on upcoming designers and artists who see themselves functioning in a rather commercial and/or applied context. This can take place within different disciplines such as graphic design, illustration, jewellery and communication design. You start from the demand of an external client, and then use your own style and artistic vision to meet your clients' expectations. You will also learn to present your realised projects in a client-friendly way. Within this track, you will develop your master's thesis in direct relation with an external company, organisation or professional you have introduced yourself, with whom you will also do a 240-hour internship.

You will choose your own research topic in which you will demonstrate your artistic skills at an academic level. You will use various media to visualise your research in an artistic way. This way, the visualisation of your research can also be part of your master's thesis and possibly presented as part of the result.

Being able to analyse and reflect on both your work and your own development process is central to the master's thesis. As such, verbalising, justifying and arguing your own choices in front of an audience is crucial in the professional world.

In this way, your master's thesis becomes a comprehensive project in which both the artistic end result and presentation, as well as the research and the process are essential.

Assessment - general information

An artistic jury will take place at the end of semester 1 and semester 2. The assessment looks at the learning objectives, which you can find on this page. The artistic jury after semester 1 aims to stimulate your further learning process. You will not be assessed in grades.

You will receive a grade assessment (and feedback) for the artistic jury that will take place after the second semester. During this artistic jury, the work, the process you completed in semester 1 and semester 2 and the internship will be taken into account.

For the internship, the following applies:

1) Your internship supervisor (from the company) has a guiding role: via a triangular conversation and the feedback forms, the internship company reports on your growth and attendance.

2) Your tutor has a guiding role: Your teacher provides feedback based on a triangular discussion (student-internship company-teacher), feedback form from the internship company and the student's self-reflection.

3) As a student:

  • Attendance is compulsory: participation in the internship is mandatory because it has a formative value. Anyone who unjustifiably fails to perform the 240 hours of internship in full cannot pass this course unit.
  • You can only make up your absence if this is practically possible and if it is legitimate. You then follow the guidelines below: contact your lecturer and the internship company.
  • During the artistic jury, the student demonstrates what part the internship played in his artistic process.

4) The artistic jury will include the internship in the assessment.
