Learning objectives

  1. You gain insight in the role of business in the 21st century and the dilemmas companies face regarding global societal and environmental challenges (OLR 2.2 and 9.1).
  2. You reflect about your role in dealing with the above dilemmas, so you can express clearly what kind of organization you want to work in or what kind of organization you want to create yourself (OLR 9.1 and 9.2).
  3. You know the basic concepts related to setting up a sustainable business, and you can demonstrate it by writing with fellow students a sustainable business plan (OLR 1.0 and 10.2).

Subject matter

Topics (non-exhaustive list and depending on time availability):

  • The dilemmas of our society today (world population, consumption society, ...) and the role of business in it.
  • The impact of the concept of Sustainable Development on the business world - including the Sustainable Development Goals (United Nations).
  • Role of global management systems such as ISO, EMAS and EFQM + CSR reporting.
  • The Ecological Footprint, Life Cycle Analysis and Cradle to Cradle.
  • The triple P Management Concept (Planet, People, Prosperity).
  • The need of new economic paradigms (Doughnut Economy).
  • Entrepreneurship and new business models (peer-to-peer, creating shared value, open-source, ...).
  • The role of money.

Assessment - general information

Assignment

  • 20% (group): writing a sustainable business plan for a (new) activity positively influencing society and/or the earth life-support systems and/or comparing sustainable and non-sustainable company in a country. As peer interaction is an important aspect of the assignment, the group assignment counts for both exam chances.
  • 5% (individual) Reflection Report: answering questions regarding the impact of this course.

Exam

75% (individual): oral exam about the theory + reflection about how this course has impacted student’s view on his/her life & career.

Resit

  • 75% oral exam.
  • 5% (individual) Reflection Report: answering questions regarding the impact of this course.

The burden of proof for the submission of assignments rests with the student.

For this course unit, it is your responsibility to:

  1. apply the MS Word and Powerpoint skills taught in ICT for Communication.
  2. make sure that your written assignments:
    • include a title page with your name, class group, the name of the course unit, lecturer, academic year and the title of your assignment;
    • include a table of contents with page numbers;
    • include page numbers on each page;
    • are printed double-sided (except for the title page);
    • do not include any plastic or any environmentally damaging materials;
    • have accurate APA source references (cf. ICT for Communication + Business Reports & Correspondence + Research & Academic Reporting).

    If your paper does not comply with any of these requirements, you will be asked to resubmit a compliant assignment by a new deadline set by your lecturer (max. 24 hours after being informed by your lecturer) and will lose up to 40% of your marks for this assignment.

  3. submit all assignments via the proper channel, as determined by your lecturer. Assignments submitted via a wrong channel will not be graded.
  4. apply the netiquette principles as described in the BBM Essentials on the Canvas BBM Hub when emailing your lecturer or any member of staff. Any email that does not comply with these principles, will receive a standard reply.
